Literature Appreciation
The student will:
Experience and engage in a variety of literature representing a variety of genre and structure including Livonia Public Schools 4-Types – Informational/Expository, Narrative/Literary, Technical/Procedural, and Response/Reflective.
  LPS Core Curriculum suggests: nonfiction, biography, newspaper articles, labels, lists, charts, fiction, fantasy, folktales, fairy tales, letter, recipe, invitation, directions, personal reflection.
  Michigan GLCEs suggest: stories, nursery rhymes, poetry, songs, environmental text, concept books, picture books.
Experience a variety of literature, including classics and award winners, for both informational and recreational needs.
Experience a variety of authors' and illustrators' styles.
Experience reading as a leisure activity.
Examine award winning literature, including winners of the Caldecott Medal, the Coretta Scott King Award, the Newbery Award, etc.
Experience a variety of literature genre such as fantasy, historical fiction, realistic/contemporary fiction, mystery, poetry, biography, and folklore.
 
Information Literacy
The student will:
Locate materials appropriate level.
Demonstrate developmentally appropriate communication skills.
Select appropriate materials in the library media center.
Use a variety of appropriate materials to find information.
Identify attributes associated with a variety of resource materials and assess the value of these resources for gathering information.
Extract information from non-text visual media: photographs, drawings, diagrams, maps, charts, and graphs.
Apply the Big6 process for information problem solving.
Evaluate information for depth, reliability of source, relevance, accuracy,and bias.
 
Independent Learning
The student will:
Select appropriate materials from a variety of authors for leisure reading and to meet information needs.
Know that literature can be experienced through various media, such as print, audiovisual, live performance, etc.
Use the online catalog (OPAC) to locate materials.
Use call numbers to find materials on the shelf.
 
Social Responsibility
The student will:
Be a responsible library user.
Demonstrate personal commitment to district policies and building rules regarding ethical and responsible use of computers and network resources.
Practice safety procedures and ethical use of the Internet.
Adhere to copyright laws and fair use standards.
Recognize the need to properly cite sources.
Properly cite sources: books with single and multiple authors, reference books, periodicals, CD-ROMS, and Internet resources.
 
Technology
The student will:
Utilize the computer mini-lab.
Recognize the components of the browser.
Use pre-selected sites to gather information.
Correctly type in a URL to access a website.
Demonstrate the ability to use skills to effectively, efficiently, and safely search for information on the Internet.
Use OPAC to search by title, author, subject, and keyword.
